Statistics for scientific work
Rolf Dalin, Mid Sweden University
After the course the participant should be able to*)
- perform an analysis of a given data set with a given problem formulation
- use the random variable concept and the concepts of a sampling distribution of a proportion and that of a mean
- calculate and interpret confidence intervals for differences between proportions and between means.
- carry out hypothesis tests of associations between two variables
- differentiate between different scales of measurement and carry out operationalizations and measurements
- plan and carry out less complex surveys and experiments
- formulate correct generalizations of the results of statistical analysis
*) with the aid of a standard statistics program package
The following topics are included
- Data analysis
- Random variables and confidence intervals
- Tests of association
- Measurements
- Planning and carrying out an investigation
- Generalizations of results from data analysis
