Enveloped Data
- encrypted content of any MIME media type
- may include content encryption keys (CEKs) that are encrypted for one or more recipients
Signed Data
- signed content of any MIME media type
- may have one or more signature values, or . . .
- may have no signature value if used only for disseminating certificates and CRLs (details later)
Just plain Data
- an arbitrary octet string, e.g., ASCII text
- interpretation of string is left to the application
