MIME Content Types

• Tells recipient UA about appropriate way to deal with content, e.g., how to present to user

  • Content-Type: <type>/<subtype> < parameters>

• Initial set of seven top-level media types

  • five discrete types: –two composite types:“text”, “image”, “audio” “message”, “multipart” “video”, “application”

• Extensible – new media types may be registered with the IANA per procedure in RFC 2048

S/MIME uses “application” and “multipart” types
