What is LDAP?

• Originally (v1,v2) a client access protocol for X.500

• LDAP v3 is a full blown client server system

• All directory implementations have an LDAP interface:

  • all X.500(93) implementations
  • Novell Directory Service (NDS)
  • Microsoft Active Directory (AD)

• Many Clientapplications have an LDAP interface:

  • mailagents
  • browser
  • PGP clients
