Currently there is no national backbone network in
Armenia. Major Internet
Service Providers operate following backbone networks.
Armentel:
"Armentel" company has the monopoly for the commercial
Internet services
providing in Armenia. It has 2Gb sattelite connection to
Teleglobe.
It provides Internet connection to Teleglobe to all major
Internet
service providers.
Infocom:
Infocom operates "ArmPack" X-25 network, which offers
TCP/IP, X.25 and
X.400 services. It connects governmental organizations and
banking
networks in Yerevan. Infocom has 64Kb connection to Teleglobe.
Arminco:
Armenian Internet Company ("Arminco") uses 256Kb
Teleglobe connection.
Arminco hosts Armenian Network Information Center (AMNIC), which
is the
National Internet Coordinating Body in Armenia. It's backbone
network uses
leased lines and 2,4GHz radio-modem connections ( speed from
640Kbps to
2Mbps). The "Arminco" Network has nodes in Yerevan,
Gumri, Vanadzor,
Echmiadzin and Mountain Karabakh.
National Academy of Sciences:
National Academy of Sciences of Armenia operates ASNET-AM
research network
which connects more than 30 scientific research and educational
organizations in Yerevan, Abovian, Burakan and Ashtarak. State
Engineering
University of Armenia and Yerevan State University have
connections with
ASNET-AM. The backbone uses radio-modem connections (640Kbps and
2Mbps).
Each node connects the organizations which are located near it.
The
connection to the Internet is via the Yerevan Physics Institute,
Infocom
and Arminco channels.
Yerevan Physics Institute operates 2,4GHz
radio-network at (2Mbps) in
Yerevan and several cities of Armenia. It uses 64Kb connection to
Teleglobe
and 128Kb connection to Desy - Germany.
Armenian Computer Center:
Armenian Computer Center operates a network which connects about
20 nodes
in Yerevan.
