Organizational structure

Network Coordination Council (NCC) is nominated by FREENet members and has responsibility for FREENet menagement. Regional FREENet branches are independent. FREENet Technical Council has the responsibility for the engineering and development of FREENet. Daily technical menagement is performed by FREENet NOC.

Actual topology

Star topology with Moscow in the centre. Lines to Kaliningrad, Chernogolovka, Tver, Yaroslavl, Perm, Penza, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Rostov-Na-Donu, Baku, Voronezh, Novgorod and Nizhnii Novgorod. Close relation to the mission-oriented networks: ITEP, RADIO-MSU, MSU.SU, EmNet/SU and RSSI.

International link to NASK (Poland), Minsk (Belarus) and Baku (Azerbajdjan).

Protocols used

IP and NJE over SNA or BSC.

Number of hosts and users

320 institutions, 60000 users.

Better international connectivity - new lines to USA and Paris, upgrade of Warsaw line..

Main obstacles

Poor cooperation of different mission oriented networks with general purpose FRRENet network. Low bandwidth of existing lines.
