Description of the present status

Estonian Educational and Research Network (EENet) is a governmental nonprofit organization established in August 1993 by the Ministry of Education with the task of managing, coordinating and developing the computer network of science, education and culture.

In 1993 the whole network consisted of less than two hundred computers in Tartu and Tallinn. In the beginning of the year 2003 the number of end-users of Estonian academic network was approximately 202,000 people: researchers, students, teachers, pupils etc.

EENet's main task is to offer Internet connection (permanent links) as well as all additional services (Mail, ftp, news, DNS etc). There are also several areas of growing importance e.g. security problems and networking policy. In addition EENet manages Estonian top level domain of Estonia (.ee).

Development projects are being carried out in cooperation with universities and institutes. EENet has acquired experience in most of the advanced technologies, for example ATM, fiber-optics, radio-links etc.

Acceptable Usage Policy

As a state-owned institution EENet offers it's services to educational, scientific or cultural establishments located in Estonia. The other important requirement is that the establishment must refrain from commercial activities in the educational and research network.
